It's Holland, Michigan, not Holland, Netherlands, an imaginary setting reminiscent of our own Solvang. Nicole plays Nancy, a school teacher and the mom of a young boy and wife of an optometrist and deacon. Holland is a picture perfect community - or is it? A psychological thriller that gives Nicole to give a neurotic paranoid performance as her world unravels.
The dream sequences, or nightmares, are delightfully surreal. And when the mcguffin is revealed, it's a good one. Best of all, there are poms. Many poms. A veritable pomerian army.
Unfortunately, the line between reality and paranoid hallucination gets too blurry and the ending leaves a lot of major plot holes. After the mcguffin, everything scurries towards an unsatisfactory ending that aren't conclusive enough. The best part of a psychological thriller is when the truth emerges, everything makes a sort of sense. This misses on that mark and leaves us wondering if the filmmakers just painted themselves into a corner and didn't have a fully cooked resolution.
Nicole is good. The nightmares are good. The mcguffin is good. The last half hour is a let down.
Not D00M recommended.
