DM will remember her from the film version of The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye, with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. There was also a good, and a bit disturbing, film made from Angels and Insects. To me she was one of those authors where there is pleasure in the style. I would recommend the first book mentioned above, which is stories revolving around fairy tales and storytelling, or Rangarok, which intertwines the Norse story with a fictionalized version of her own experience as a child sent to the country during WWII and discovering Norse myths. I haven't read any of her novels - she also wrote Possession, which was made into a film I haven't seen with Gweneth Paltro - but she was a great writer of short stories.
