Shaolin Monks meet modern ballet. Very modern. Ballerinas try to do traditional kung fu. Shaolin monks try to pirouette and plie. It's all do some very abstract music, some electronic soundscapes, some traditional Chinese instruments. Sold out tight for two weeks of performances. Standing ovations.
I liked it. It was the most moving Shaolin performance I've seen in years. Of course, I've seen dozens upon dozens of Shaolin performances. This was truly out of the box, so for me, it was really refreshing. I enjoy modern interpretative dance. It leaves your mind with little to cling to, so you just have to enjoy the moment for what it is and make your own conclusions.
There may be more on this in the S.F. Chron soon.
