We still have our stage right, second row seats, which afford us a fabulous view of the violins, and on this occasion, the second best view of a pianist. Visiting was Li Yundi, playing Liszt Piano Concerto #1. For those who don't know, Liszt is renowned for piano concertos of such sophistication and complexity that they are impossible to play. Many have been re-written just so they could be executed. I've never been that close to a pianist of that level and it was simply astounding. How Li could keep that much in his head and his hands was totally beyond me. Incredible.
Also performed was Ravel's Daphne and Chloe, no. 2., with James Gaffigan conducting. I didn't know that piece and much to my delight, it ended quite bombastically.
Good stuff.
