Raya and the Last Dragon
A friend bought it and set up a private livestream - same friend that hooked me up with
Mulan. It was a little glitchy but still watchable.
I enjoyed it. It was very predictable. Kelly Marie Tran is a solid voice actress. Awkwafina tries to pull off the zany mystical creature ala Murphy's Mushu or Williams' Genie but she doesn't quite succeed. Gemma Chan is good too. Benjamin Wong rocks. He always rocks. The look of the world is colorful, eliciting memories of Thailand and Indonesia. The fusion mythology is a bit confused, especially when it comes to the dragon/naga, but it is a fantasy world, after all. It's a good father/daughter tale, as well as female empowerment, but it's really predictable, right down to the Disney death.
What redeems it for me is the sword fights. It's some of the best Disney sword fights so far.
I wouldn't particularly recommend it to DOOM.

Good plan. Not worth paying extra.

Random afterthought. Raya's mount Tuk Tuk is a giant pillbug hedgehog. Tuk Tuk is a play on Thai - in Thailand, there are these ubiquitous 3-wheeled taxis, sort of like covered scooters that fit a driver and a few passengers. Tuk Tuk works a lot like BB8, a rolling ball and by some mystery, the saddle stays on top. Tuk Tuk is never quite explained and is one of the only magical beasts in Raya's world aside from the furry dragons.
I dislike furry dragons. Dragons are scaly, not furry. This is true of both eastern and western dragons. If they were to evolve, I'd expect feathers like a quetzalcoatl. Just sayin...

I give it a resounding Meh. I picked up on the Tuk-Tuk bit and I did like that character most of all. But the specific character type seems to be in all Disney movies. I found the story a bit dull. A lot of time given to straight up exposition which they sometimes did the same information twice. Awkwafina was a bit too zany and not very funny.
And why was the the last dragon on a boat at the end of the river?
The sword was good.

Agreed. Furry dragons suck. That should be a T-shirt.

Yeah, that's what really won me over on this one. Sword fights. Plus it was a stepping stone to selling another article to UNESCO.

Just watched this. Fair. Too long in my opinion. I think they could have tightened it up a bit. I imagine the dragon was furry to make it more appealing to children - easier to sell products. At the beginning, I thought the characters skin looked too much like plastic, so it was like watching a movie of Barbies or GI Joes. Either I got used to it or they toned it down as it went on. Not worth re-watching.

Trite story. I've seen something similar many times...but the animation is pretty amazing. Great fight scenes, the hair of the dragon while floating in the surface of the water, the lights from the paper lanterns. All pretty well done.
