A Canadian film that premiered at TIFF about the struggles of Native Canadians under the oppressive Catholic Residential Schools, a tyrannical assimilation program inflicted by the government. WTF is up with Catholics? They are so mean. And nasty. Like gloriously nasty (this makes sense if you see the film). The film has an agenda - to shed light on this horrible genocide - and it's bleak overall accept where the protagonist finds redemption. And that redemption is... hockey. Remember? Canadian. There's some gorgeous scenery - much is shot on some native reservation - and a lot of racial issues and humiliation, and hockey. The center of the film is all hockey. eh?
No sword fights. Not particularly DOOM recommended.

Not on Criterion, Kanopy, or Hoopla, but found it on Netflix streaming. Actually, I could have read the novel, as Hoopla has the downloadable novel. But I'm a slow reader and opted to just watch the movie to shorten the anticipated misery.
Yeah, I see what you mean. It's always darkest before the event horizon, then straight to vantablack.
Unpleasant on so many levels. The crushing conformity and indoctrination, all administered sadistically. The total annihilation of an entire culture. And then, yeah, the icing on the cake...
You know it's a dark movie when the feel-good moment involves horse turds.
I thought Indian Horse was on his way to better things when Choy Yun Fat and his wife took him into their home. But silly Indian Horse ventured outside that protective sphere, and there are limits to Choy Yun Fat's philanthropy; he can't be expected to follow you around with a protective umbrella.
I feel like I'm trapped under ice, needing to come up for air.
I'm nobody's pony.

We got the DVD from Netflix. It was an odd pick, one of Stacy's. She also predicted its darkest final 'oh so catholic' mcguffin.
It reminded me of many tales that Hoel & Donna told me about res life. I didn't realize that Canada had similar issues.
But what about that hockey, eh?

As if the rest of DOOM cares. They won't watch this. The others can't even get through the first part of The Human Condition. Cinephilic weaklings.
But yeah, frozen horse turds ftw.
