David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
#1
This is one of the later Dickens books, and he's at the top of his game. The big pleasure is the language; the story is pretty straightforward - the life story of the title character, told by him. With some great character names, like Mr. Murdstone and Uriah Heep. Some of it turns on big coincidences, but to some degree I think that's true of many novels. DOOM recommended? Probably not unless you already like Dickens. Otherwise I'd start with A Christmas Carol.
