A famine of Horses by P.F. Chisolm
#1
Who knew the Scottish Border Wars of the late 16th century could be so entertaining?

Upon the recommendation of our former Highland Ave housemate, the QOE, I started reading this series and they are quite good. I also read Steel Bonnets by George Macdonald Frasier which gives the history of the Scottish Border at this time which was helpful but not quite necessary. The hero of Chisolms series, Sir Robert Carey, appears also as a historical figure in Steel Bonnets.

To be fair, though, the books main hero is Sergeant Dodd who is second in command and spends most of the series trying to figure how to deal with this popinjay from London who has come to be Deputy Warden of the English West March.

They have lots of adventures together. Carey isn't as weak as Dodd first thought and over the course of the five books I've read they gradually achieve some mutual respect.

There is fighting and thievery and a mystery at the heart of each book that Carey tries to solve.

They are quite fun. Lots of sword fights.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
