a.k.a. post-Endgame Ragnarok.
For Father's Day, Tara took me out to lunch and a movie, which I'm perfectly happy with because it's really about spending a day with her. We hit up Saturn Cafe because it was one of the Cruz places she wanted to hit for her brief stay. That was a bit disappointed because they ran out of the special biscuits&gravy I ordered and didn't tell us until Tara's food came out, and also the floats are freakin $7.50 now. Then there wasn't much in the theaters to see. I suggested this or Godzilla, and she opted for this because she likes Tessa the Valkyrie. I do too. She hasn't seen any of the previous MIB franchise (and watching the trailers, we realized she hasn't seen any Fast & Furious or Terminator films either). Not that it mattered much. I enjoyed MIBI & MIBIII, but I don't remember them that clearly. I think it was mostly for Tommy Lee. Ever since The Fugitive, he's been enjoyable to watch.
MIB:I is just about what you'd expect it to be - formulaic, post-Magical Beasts CGI, predictable mcguffin. The franchise tried to trade out Will & Tommy Lee for Thor and the Valkyrie with little success. Mind you, they are both beautiful and have a decent chemistry, but even with the snarky buddy-film dialog, that chemistry doesn't emerge until late in the film when Kamail joins them voicing Pawnie, a queen's pawn alien, and by then, it's too late. The 'international' part means that its set somewhat in Britain, somewhat in Morocco and on the Eiffel Tower, although the few stock shots did little to convince that they every left a Hollywood lot. Even Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson couldn't save this, not that you'd expect them to be able to do so. We saw the 3D showing because that's what was available. Like usual, the 3D was great for the trailers (especially Maleficent), and then good for the first half hour or so, and then I just kinda forgot about why I was wearing those dumb glasses.
I do like Tessa and hope she succeeds in some more diverse roles. Thor, well, he's great at Thor and the best part of this film has a nod to that with a hammer scene. I'm eager to see him again in Guardians III and nothing else.
Nevertheless, I had a fine time with Tara.
Totally give this one a pass, not that I imagine there were many of you planning to see it.
