The Protector (Netflix)
#1
Wednesday, I was seduced by Budapest. Thursday night, it was Istanbul. I need to stop using cities I want to go visit again as a criteria for watching a show.

Young Halkan is a struggling young man in modern day Istanbul who wants to get out of his adopted father's shop in the grand bazaar and open up his own antique shop across  the street from skyscraper of his entrepreneurial hero. But his adopted father won't help him and his roommate business partner just gambled away all their money. But that's the least of his problems. Turns out he is the next protector of Istanbul, guarding it against the last immortal. He finds this out after a shootout in a restaurant. He is not pleased by the news.

This show is, I believe, a Turksh production. And it's lip synched rather than sub-titled which I am not a fan of. One of the villains I swear is voiced by Jeffrey Tambor. But I always get that weird feeling when the lips don't match up to the dialogue. But it was nice to see depictions of Arabs and Turks where they aren't playing terrorists. It is just normal everyday life in Turkey. Except for the whole supernatural death to the city aspect of the show.

Unfortunately, it's not a very good show. Halkan spends a lot of time whining about his fate. The action sequences are few and far between. At least they are poorly done when they do occur. Everyone plays their characters to 11. And not a lot happens, except for whining and staring longingly at old photographs.

I'm probably done with this series. I watched two episodes last night, mainly to see if anything happened in the second episode since nothing really happened in the first episode. Short answer: no. I might watch a third episode to see if anything happens there.

No more film choices based on cities.

(Okay, I did watch Derry Girls last night, too, because it was set in Ireland. It was funny and I will watch more episodes of that. Don't judge me.)
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
