Burger Boogaloo 2018 @ Mosswood Park, Oakland
#1
I may be too tired to post this thread. Actually, I am too tired. Check back later.

<12 hours later>

OK - I got some sleep and am semi-lucid.

2 11-hour days of punk rock revelry MC'ed by John Waters. The festival is organized by the founders of Burger Records (don't ask me, I was never a purveyor of American punk). It is held on 2 stages in Oakland's Mosswood Park, right next to Kaiser hospital.

This year saw a plethora of bands who broke up in the 90's but reunited for one-off sets in this festival, with a couple of newbies and legends.

Day 1:

11:45 - 12:15 The Frances Lau experience: As we were walking to the venue I heard Depeche Mode blasting from the PA system Upon entering the gates we realized it was actually the opening act. A 9-year old kid with a drum machine, effects pedals and a synthesizer was recreating 70's and 80's synth-pop hits live, by himself. He belted out the vocals to "Funkytown", "Enola Gay"(OMD) and others with uncanny accuracy. The earlybird crowd ate it up.

12:30 - 1:00 The Nots: All-girl punk band. We watched a couple songs then went to the food booths.

1:15 - 1:45 Pookie and the Poodlez: Very fun punk-pop band

Fast forward through Okmoniks, Flytraps, Hunx and his Punx, The Spits, Mudhoney, Traditional Fools

6:45 - 7:30 The Mummies: These guys were great. The set started with a group coming onstage in Planet of the Apes costumes. Two gorillas were carrying a cloth hammock-thing with something inside. Dr. Zaius gave a speech about how they had taught "Man-Animals" to play instruments and called for them to come onstage. The gorillas prodded the band (wrapped in mummy bandages) with pole-collars who grabbed their instruments and started playing. The hammock-thing burst open and the lead singer jumped out, grabbed the mic and did his thing (occasionally yelling "Fuck you, ape". At the end the apes stormed the stage and destroyed all of the instruments. Lots of fun.

8:15 - 9:45 DEVO: Their first full set in 4 years. I've seen them 3 times and they were as great as ever. We only saw the first half because I had dressed for summer weather and was not prepared for the sub-zero temps that dropped that evening.

Day 2

11:45 - 12:15 Battleship: Screaming thrash-punk. Too early for this crap. Went to the bar area and had a fantastic vegan Bloody Mary, garnished with asparagus, jalapenos, pickle spears and a healthy dose of hot sauce. Breakfast of champions I tell you!

12:35 - 1:15 Gris Gris: Good old-fashioned psychedelic rock . Reminded me of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun"-era Pink Floyd. I bought a record from the merch booth.

Fast forward through Subsonics

2:15 - 2:45 Nobunny (it was supposed to be The Dwarves but they cancelled): We saw these guys last year. The singer wears a bunny mask and leather underwear. He sings like a cartoon character (Animaniacs?) and the music is hook-laden pop-punk. We were glad The Dwarves cancelled.

Fast forward through The Flakes and Firestarter (from Japan)

4:30 - 5:15 Quintron and Miss Pussycat: 1 guy on organ, complete with one of those speakers with the spinning cones (like The Dead use). Miss Pussycat sings and plays maracas. Three other people play maracas to make sure you can hear the maracas over the keyboard wall-of-sound. At the end of the show they put down the instruments and do an insane puppet show. Highly recommended.

Fast-forward through The Rip-Offs, Le Shok and Giuda (from Italy).

8:15 - 9:45 The Damned: I think this is my 6th Damned concert. They were great but this band should be experienced in an indoor venue and in the dark.

My feet hurt.

it's weird when you edit your initial post instead of just making a new post.  really really weird.

I saw Devo with Jenny O. She passed out because of the crowd and I had to drag her from the venue.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
