Dreadnaught (1981)
#1
It's been years since I've revisited this gem. A true tour de force for a young Yuen Biao, and Kwan Tak Hing's final role as Wong Fei Hung. I don't remember it being quite so absurd as it is, but that makes it even better now, especially with the flippant dubbing. YB plays Peanut, a wimpy student of WFH, as a psycho killer is on the loose. Super wacky weapons like a saw bladed frisbee bowl and telescopic sleeves rimmed with coins that can take out 6x6 beams. Surreal theater fights (the psycho killer dons opera demon face paint and just grimaces all the time. KTH is commanding as WFH, classy as the ultimate folk hero gentleman warrior, and still delivers some good action that's clearly him, not a stunt double (there is a double but mostly for acrobatics). The supporting cast are Jackie regulars. Lots of dopey cops bitch slapping each other. YB shines when he finally figures out his Kung Fu - awesome finale fight with a classic ending.

I gotta see this double featured with Sammo's Magnificent Butcher some day.
