Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (2015)
#1
I thought this was going to be another Chinese tomb raider flick but was pleasantly surprised at about the half hour mark when it took a psychedelic turn with an Elvis impersonator singing praises for Genghis Khan. It's about ancient aliens, mystic beasts, and magical connections, set in red China of the 80s with a poke at nationalism of the day. Hard to describe really, but well crafted despite somewhat mediocre cgi, redeemed by some gorgeous panoramic shots, and random surreal touches. The mystery behind it was engaging enough to suspend belief. Not sure all the loose ends were tied up neatly in the end, but that didn't really matter. The finale battle in Oil Town reminded my of Tremors in a good way.

Been in my Netflix queue forever as part of my Chinese Tomb Raider research. Glad I finally watched it.
