Johannes Cabal, the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard
#1
I say go read this book and it's four sequels, although I am only on the third book in the series

If you like the Gail Carriger Parasol Protectorate series, you'll like these books even better.

Cabal is a Necromancer who wants his soul contract back from the devil. The devil says he can have it back if he gets the devil 100 souls in exchange by using an evil carnival to entice the victims. I know. That old trope.

Cabal is amoral and pragmatic and British and funny. The story is really good. Cabal bring his Vampire brother along and the brother turns out to be the more human of the two brothers.

It's funny, well plotted, clever, engaging.

Best of all, the next book in the series, Cabal the Detective, is a complete change of pace and equally as good. The third book changes again and at this point still really good.

Go get them.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

Recommended by one of my fave authors (Richard Kadrey) too. I'll definitely pick them up.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

In addition to the five books, there's also a short story — Johannesburg Cabal and the Blustery Day. I downloaded it from iBooks, and apparently it was first published in “H.P. Lovecraft’s Magazine of Horror” #1, 2004.” Enjoy!
