The Intern
#1
I forgot to post a review here.  I posted one on KFM, because believe it or not, it was relevant there.  Here's that review:

Quote:Caught this on British Airlines while crossing the Atlantic. It wasn't the sort of film that needed a big screen and worked well on those tiny airplane seat-back screens. Whenever I went to the bathroom, I saw a lot of other passengers watching it.

The Tai Chi bookends this film, very predictably so, once you see the opening scene of it. There's nothing else martial here, but it's a nice Tai Chi moment. I'm happy for Tiffany Chen and that she got Tai Chi the exposure here.

Deniro plays the nicest retiree ever. Hathaway is the nicest working women heading a start-up ever. Rene Russo is cougar-ific. It's a nice film, very family friendly, very predictable, very white, like a bowl of Wheaties and milk. No swordfights. I'm glad I didn't review it. [Image: frown.gif]

BTW, I've never met Tiffany, but I've hung out with her brother, Max.

Anyway, I had this flash thought on my commute this morning that this film needs a mash-up spoof vid made where instead of DeNiro playing the role of the intern, Ben, he should play an aging Travis Bickle as an intern to Hathaway.  That would totally kick ass.

Spin the wheel of cliches and let's go.

Mr. Deniro really needs to find material worthy of his skill set. It makes me sad that this is the level of material being offered to him.

Retired Scott goes back to work as intern at an burgeoning e-commerce fashion site. Scott, played by Deniro naturally goes to work for the CEO and overstressed Anne Hathaway who wants nothing to do with the intern. But DeNiro has a lot to teach Hathaway.

It's a romantic comedy without the romance. The characters never grow, which is kind of a basic thing for any story. Basically the spine of the story is whether or not Anne will hire a CEO to take her job. Meh. There are a few laughs, very few

No sword fights. No HP. Yes, I watched this film to see Anne Hathaway.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

And yes, I totally agree with your review, right down to the tragic lack of sword fights.

I watched it because my wife wanted to, and also to watch Anne Hathaway. I was entertained because I came in with zero expectations. Later I thought it was sort of like a contemporary version of old movies like My Man Godfrey. Only that one was way better. Of course it was - William Powell was in it. Maybe not a great example. So more like some of those old movies you find on TCM that you've never heard of.

I think the best De Niro performance of the 2000s was in Stardust.
