This is an art film by Laurie Anderson. As a few of you might remember, I obsessed over her United States in high school. There was nothing like her back then. I was a huge fan. She married Lou Reed, and I had always hoped that I would get to meet her, even though it's been decades since I've thought about her work.
Well, I've been invited to interview her about this next week in S.F. The problem is that Heart of a Dog has nothing to do with martial arts. It's an ode to her Rat Terrier, a beautiful meditation on death, change, pets, art, Buddhism, 9/11, technology, and so many things - I was very moved by it actually. Lou isn't mentioned at all beyond a dedication at the end while one of his songs plays, and a few quick images (he also plays a role which I didn't notice at the time). HoaD is a stream-of-consciousness of images and music, held together by Laurie's ever-ponderous narration. No martial arts. None.
I've made a martial connect for Harry Potter to get into the final installment screener. I made one for Ziggy Marley just because I wanted to interview him. Now I'm scrambling to make a connection for Laurie, one that both showcases her wonderful film and doesn't milk Reed, as that would be wrong here. Alas....what to do?
