The American Astronaut (2001) by Cory McAbee
#1
After I’d watched this, Lady Cranefly called out from her room, “You were laughing an awful lot.” Well, yeah. My funny bones have no defense against this kind of zaniness. I strongly suggested she watch it, and the following night she did, with me watching it a second time beside her. No, I don’t do this very often.

The American Astronaut is another movie from the 366weirdmovies list. I had low expectations, noting from the opening scene that it was an extremely low-budget endeavor (some of the special effects are painful to watch). Yet Cory McAbee is immensely talented. He not only wrote, directed, and starred in this film, he composed the music and wrote the lyrics.

Lady Cranefly and I both loved the soundtrack (some of the songs are ear-worm-worthy). For lack of a better term, Lady Cranefly has labeled it rock-a-billy punk. The story is absurdist but with an internal consistency, with likable characters who grow on you. It helps to have seasoned actors, which most of the cast are. Cory’s directorial eye (despite budgetary constraints) is masterful.

I won’t go much into the plot. Suffice it to say that it opens on Ceres, in a bar.

My highest recommendation.

I think i saw this on the TVs at the Crepe Place once (no sound, just strange visuals), so i later watched it at home. Black and white, Eraserhead-esque is all I remember.
