Planet of Snail (Korean 2011) by Seung-jun Yi

How many deaf-and-blind people does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

In this case, just one. But it takes a while, and he needs a lot of instruction.

This is a documentary about a deaf-and-blind guy and his relationship with a very supportive wife. While he is over six feet, she's maybe 4-and-a-half feet, making them a striking couple in every conceivable way. They communicate largely by touch, which consists mostly of tapping out Braille on each other’s fingers. (The man can talk, by the way, and does so at times.) I was expecting lots of swordfights because, well, the guy is blind, right? But it turns out DM has conditioned me of late to have this unreasonable expectation.

This is a very touching portrait. The guy is truly a poet in his observations. At one point he decides he is losing his ability to move about in unknown surroundings because his wife always helps him. So he announces he must take some trips alone. The wife acquiesces, but you can tell it troubles her. He does fine on an outing, but you see that the wife virtually comes apart at the seams. She doesn’t know what to do when he isn’t around. Essentially, she is more dependent on him than he is on her. They’re both extremely likable.

Recommended, even if not suitable for a Doom gathering.
I'm nobody's pony.
