Alice 2009 (SyFy)
#1
This was a 2-part original on SyFy Network. Being an Alice fan, I'm skeptical of versions that don't stick to the story (I have my doubts about the upcoming Tim Burton version...), but this steered pretty clear from the original and just took inspiration from it, much like the "Tin Man" series they did on SyFy previously. It took some time to get into the story and the production aesthetic, and some of it didn't really work for me, but I ended up enjoying it in spite of myself. Some highlights: Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) as a quixotic White Knight, the March Hare in the role of creepy cyborg assassin, Drs. Dum and Dee as twisted interrogators, Harry Dean Stanton as Caterpiller, and Kathy Bates as the Red Queen.

The "Hatter", elevated to a much more central role, was a bit of a disappointment. The White Knight was nuttier character by far...

I also enjoyed it (ditto "Tin Man") and appreciate doing something really different with an established standard. It looked like another Canadian production...
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
