yea, i know. this ain't gonna be a ppfy-pleasin' meat-eating manly review. nope. no way, no how.

only two of you have any idea what it's like to raise a daughter. and in that barrage of questionable images and role models that america bombards little girls, this was a refreshing wholesome flick. it's not hannah montana, not lindsay lohan, god forbid it be britney. it's not hermione or fiona, playing 2nd fiddle to harry and shrek. it's sweet, slightly educational, perhaps a warning of a potential depression. it's horribly predictable, and actually not the best of the american girl series. molly, samantha and felicity. yes, i've seen the other three direct to dvd flicks. we own them. bought them at target for $16 and they came with a discount $7.50 off coupon for kit. we got two by mistake, so it was quite a bargain. american girl is a doll, a book series and movies. there's even a store in n.y. where you and your doll can go have ice cream. fortunately, t's not into the books (too deep into harry potter) or the dolls (she's never been one for dolls - i was worse  ) but the movies, we enjoy. t likes felicity the best and kit 2nd. i'm inclined to agree.

abegail shakes off her little miss sunshine image, but doesn't deliver that much - it's not that demanding a role. still, dakota could have blown her out of the water in this role. julia ormond proves she still has a gorgeous face and is worthy of more. chris o'donnell is still robin. once you don the yellow tights, it's over, boy wonder, totally over. wallace shawn is still the ferengi/mastermind/rex with andre. joan cusack is still joan cusack. there's a great twist with willow smith, opening against her poppa in hancock (who told her he was going to crush her in the box office and did), and i've just sort of spoiled it for you, but it's not like any of you were going to run out and see this film anyway. that's the only unpredictable moment. i took my kid and her friend. her friend had to go potty during the final chase scene. and they are both still amazed how i outed the villains about a third of the way through the film, even giving the telltale clue that would reveal them. score one for daddy.

My daughter got the computer game as a gift ages ago (mid-90's?). It was essentially a computerized puppet show theater. You picked out the cast and props from a bunch of 2-D paper-doll-like cut-outs. Then you directed their movements across the stage, set the scene, picked the dialog, when you were all done, you put it in motion like a movie.

She never did much with it, but she, my son and I had a great time making the American Girls float around the stage and spout absurd, random lines. It reminded me of séance scenes in the movies, but was totally silly.

... what I should get my niece for her birthday. She's turning 5 on August 25th. Last year she was into Dora the Explorer and singing the songs from High School Musical. What would she likely be into now???
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

T's Dora phase was really short. I think it works better with latinas. She really wanted a Dora backpackone b-day but now abhors the thing. HSM is still pretty big with the 5-8 set, but that gets into the whole world of Radio Disney. Again, T only engaged that a little, thankfully. Five is well in the princess zone, again major Disney. T was also into fairies - she's read some 50 or 60 rainbow fairy books already (see http://www.rainbowmagiconline.com/). Once more, Disney has that nailed with the Neverland tales and a new fairy movie coming (see http://disney.go.com/fairies/). Fairies and princesses are good. Let me ponder this a little more and get back to you. I'll ask T.

Now it's all about Harry Potter.
