I almost put these books aside when the main male character submits to hardcore gay sex with his hated former lover. It was bit graphically depicted and for some reason this isn't my cup of tea in books. I really can't give you a good explanation why I kept reading. Suffice it to say by the time I got to the third book it really wasn't worth.
In Melusine, Felix Harrowgate, a lord and wizard is used (sexually) to destroy the Virtu a giant magic crystal which keeps all the magic users in Melusine in line and helps prevent attacks from outside agencies. There was something about using sex to access Felix's power, but I only skimmed it. Malkor the agressor also puts a spell on Felix to keep from talking about Malkor's part in the destruction this drives Felix mad in a really cool way.
Felix's unkown half brother, Mildmay, helps rescue Felix and travelss with him across the world to help heal his problems. When you realized Felix and Mildmay were the only two people in Melusine with red hair, you kind of get the hint they are long lost brothers. Thankfully, Ms. Monette didn't give in to letting Felix and Mildmay have sex, but it was close. There were a lot of descriptions of how beautiful Mildmay appeared by Felix. The best part of this book was Felix's narrative. He's insane for most of the book and what goes on around him is quite colorful.
In the second book we fix the Virtu. Or Felix does. Felix and Mildmay are back in the castle of Mirador. There is a lot of talking with ghosts. Felix and Mildmay continue to fight like brothers despite the fact they love each other in a brotherly sort of way. But there wasn't any of that cool I'm insane narration.
By the third book, Mirador, there really isn't anything to do but play he said-she said. Mehitabel a spy/lover Mildmay started sleeping with in the third book gets to narrate in this book. Mildmay has intimacy issues so he and Mehitabel break up and she gets to go be the kings lover. Eventually some nefarious plot is uncovered by Mildmay which saves the King's life. While doing this, Felix uses his magic to drive a man insane, which is a no-no in Melusine. At the end of the book, Felix is banished and Mildmay goes with him.
If you like the gay fantasy wizard lifestyle, these books might be for you.
