The King of Kong
#1
While perusing Aintitcool.com I noticed a ticket giveaway for 'The King of Kong'. I'd seen a poster for it at ComicCon so I sent in my email address.

A few days later I got an email back saying I was on the list. Yaaayyyy!

I guess I need to explain why I made Dee Dee wait over an hour in line because I wanted to get there early. I thought there would be a million people wanting to get in. I mean who doesn't want to see a documentary about two guys vying for the Donkey Kong world championship?

DONKEY KONG!

Actually, this movie has been receiving some stellar reviews and is on this weeks Entertainment Weekly's 'Must' list.

The film concentrates on a 'nice guy' from Redmond, WA and his rival, an egotistical career video-game competitor from Florida.

Through a series of interviews and tournament footage the filmmaker at first makes us laugh at the total geekdom of the gaming enthusiasts, but then shifts the focus to how one man struggles against an established organization. Steve (the 'nice' guy), practices in his garage as his kids play around him. Bill (the 'mean' one) brags about how awesome he is and orates about those who are born to greatness.

The bias of the film is obvious, and the filmmaker uses lots of editing tricks to demonize Bill and make Steve into the loveable underdog. 80's music is almost a character unto itself as songs like 'Boys Don't Cry' and 'Eye of the Tiger' are used to underscore the onscreen events.

The film is hilarious and the nearly-full house was laughing non-stop. The ovation at the end was loud and long.

I would not be surprised to see this get a documentary Oscar nod (although it has no chance against 'Sicko'). I recommend this to retro-gamers and non-gamers alike. As a Q-Bert master (DM can back me up on this) this film touched me in inappropriate places. Go see it.

...I still hear it played at martial arts tournaments for musical forms.

Q-Bert is the most messed up videogame ever. The fact that ED is the greatest Q-Bert player DM has ever seen is yet another testament to the bizarre and disturbed architecture that comprises ED's mind.
