In the latest infomercial for the "Portray a Starving Character Diet," Christian Bale does Dieter Dengler, who is shot down on his first bombing mission in Vietnam (actually Laos). Captured by the Viet Cong, he must survive torture tactics that seem downright mild compared to our up-the-ante tactics in Iraq and, well, around the globe.
It's a grim movie, carried by Bale's acting. Lady Cranefly and I both liked it, though the Lady crushed my bicep during the token leech scene. We were kept guessing as to which of the seven prisoners would survive and which would die. In hindsight, we should have known Harry Potter would pull through with a little help from his AK-47. Lady Cranefly did wonder as we left the theater whether the real Dieter Dengler survived as long as he did (walking away from 5 plane crashes) because he wasn't particularly bright. What can I say. Performing integral calculus for your captors probably doesn't add many years to your life expectancy.
I better stop. Starting to wander all over the map.
--cranefly.
P.S. For other such diet infomercials, see "The Mechanic" (Christian Bale), "Philadelphia" (Tom Hanks), or "Cast Away" (Tom Hanks). As you can see, Bale and Hanks are dieting neck and neck.
