Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
#1
Kim Ki-duk, director

A simple, quiet, beautiful film, very Buddhist, that takes place mostly in the middle of a lake where a small temple sits upon a small island.
A Buddhist monk lives there with a young boy. They make outings by boat to the bank to gather medicinal herbs. Occasionally someone comes out to the island hoping to be healed.

Early on there are disturbing hints that the boy may not be able to uphold Buddhist principals. When he grows up, and a mother and daughter pay a visit, this plays out.

As the title suggests, there is circularity to the storyline. But it has enough twists and turns and visuals that it avoids being predictably circular -- if that makes any sense.

Not outrageous enough to be Doom material, but a very good movie -- especially if you're in a contemplative mood.

I am intending to check out more by Kim Ki-duk.

Note: There are 2 directors named Kim Ki-duk. One did movies back in the '60s and '70s. This is the more recent one.
I'm nobody's pony.
