Encanto (2021)

The Matriarch of the Madrigal family is given magic powers in the form of a candle that never goes out. All the descendants have different magic power and even the house is magical. Except for Mirabella. The house did not give her any powers on her special day. But now the magic seems to be running out and it's up to magic less Mirabella to find out why. And there are show tunes along the way provided by the ever present Lin-Manuel Miranda.

It's kind of an affirmation movie as each of the cousins and relatives learn about themselves and their powers as Mirabella questions them about why the house is running out of magic. John Leguizamo plays cousin Bruno who is shunned because he can see the future and his prophecies aren't that good. He also has one of the best songs in the movie.

It's kind of fun. It's kind of awkwardly put together. Maybe stilted is a better word. It's not as good as some recent Disney offerings which is probably why it appeared so quickly on Disney+

No sword fights. But there is a lot of coffee consumption.

Strange tale the didn’t make a whole lot of sense but it was very colorful. The imagery was so frantic. Miranda’s music is distinctive but I can’t quite put my finger one why. Didn’t know that Rosa could sing - good role for her. Enjoyable, lite family fair. Some of the magic scenes felt fresh but I can’t remember what now.

The songs from the musical have been getting a lot of buzz. First it was "We don't talk about Bruno" and currently "Under the Surface". The more I hear them, the more I like them. But they are pernicious earworms which is good and bad. I believe "Bruno" has now been played more than "Let it Go" from Frozen.

We started this but dropped it. It was so drawn out. Christina wanted to give up earlier, but I thought I'd give it a while longer since we'd pretty much only gotten through the (decidedly long) intro. But after the strong sister started singing I gave up too. It felt like it was going to take about three hours to get to the point.
