The Best of Lester Del Rey
#1
Perhaps I'm early reviewing this since I haven't finished yet, but not much is going up right now, so I thought I would.

I had never read Del Rey, except for Police Your Planet, so when I saw this cheap on HamiltonBooks I picked it up. And I've enjoyed it. He's a good writer; the stories are for the most part well-constructed. Stylistically it's to Simak (my favorite), but Del Rey is a bit more pessimistic in tone. There's an amusing time travel paradox story, and a good one about an elf tinker.

I did think a couple of the stories were mediocre, but the author edited the volume, and it probably would have been better if someone else had done so, since the author is not always the best judge of the work. I'm going to seek out some more of his work, but I'll have to hit ABE; it's pretty much all out of print.
