I thought this was like Gosford Park - very episodic and mainly just observing the characters interacting. Of course it was a bit different, because it was interspersed with music (some good, some not as good) and the vaguely supernatural framing story, which didn't really match the tone of the rest of the film, but didn't take much screen time, and Virginia Madsen is pretty, so I didn't mind. (That was my Neil Stephensonian sentence.)
I was entertained, but he didn't make a grand statement with his last film.
