This guy is a writer for Outside, and this is supposedly a book about freediving (diving with held breath and no scuba equipment). There isn't enough of that for a whole book, so he brings in sharks, whales, and deep ocean exploration. The material on whales and sharks was particularly interesting. Also some interesting stuff about deep ocean vents and the origin of life. A bit meandering, but easy going, and I got through it in a couple of days. Recommended if you have any interest in any of those things.
FYI the heart rate automatically slows underwater - even under exertion, so you can hold your breath longer underwater than on land. Apparently you can trigger this reflex merely by putting your face under water. I have not tested this.
