Tristana (1970)
#1
Bunuel directed Deneuve as a woman who is abused by her ward, the elder Fernando Rey, and then falls for an artist, Franco Nero. It's shot in Toledo and those distinctive streets were unmistakable, along with moments at the train station and the church that looked familiar. The film was banned in Spain for Bunuel's atheism of all things. It's not so surreal, except for its fascination with food. Deneuve is stunning a ruined woman and Rey's kinky 'treat me like a father and a husband' head trip is messed up. Deneuve falls ill and loses a leg, which reminded me of when cf introduced a young naive and innocent dm to amputee porn. The ending is abrupt, almost like some sort of disdainful French existential flick.

No sword fights but it is Toledo, so there are swords on the walls and a good scene with Rey being asked to oversee a duel but refusing because it was only to first blood which he deemed unmanly. Not DOOM recommended, not even for Bunuel fans. I expected more. Maybe recommended for DOOMers who've been to Toledo.
