He was a good writer. His book on WWI, A Storm in Flanders was very good, although a few of his facts have since been debunked. (See Catastrophe 1914 for a fuller picture.) And Forrest Gump was entertaining. The book. The film twisted it around, and while it looked great - and the music fit in really well - it wrecked the story. And the book is way funnier. (The key point on that is in the book, the line is "being an idiot is no box of chocolates.")
