Hey, it's a David Lean flick. It stars Katherine Hepburn. It's the less fun version of Passage to India. Weirdest of all, it wasn't shot in widescreen format. Or it was and they just didn't give me the option to view it widescreen. Bastards.
The story in a nutshell. Spinster Hepburn goes to Venice to have some sort of awakening. She eventually has her awakening from a married Venetian. He has a special arrangement with his wife. After several scenes of chest beating, she gives in to her feelings and continues her relationship with the Venetian. Until she decides it's time to go and she leaves Venice heartbroken. Whatever.
I wanted to see what Venice looked like in the '50s. Guess what? It looks pretty much the same. Although, they had removed a lot of the grime from the buildings when I went. Wierdest of all, they let Kate fall into one of the canals. Yikes. Blech. Yikes. I've seen those canals. You aren't going to catch me in them anytime soon without a complete biohazmat suit. But there she was swimming away in her thin white cotton dress.
I guess it was amazing for the time that a woman could have an adulteress affair and not be dragged off and stoned.
