We're in an Austen binge. This ITV adaptation features the Shape of Water creature-banger as Anne and the Borg queen as Lady Russell. It's a bit bland although Hawkins was good in the role. A tad heavy on the steady cam following characters walking about which came to a crescendo with Anne dashing through the streets of Bath to catch the elusive Wentworth. There's a remarkable single-shot scene on the sea wall where huge waves are crashing over and the two actors walk past them immersed in dialog, narrowly missing getting drenched. Not sure how they timed that out so well, or why anyone would want to walk that sea wall with the waves crashing like that. I swear I've seen this before because several scenes looked familiar, but maybe I fell asleep watching it because that tends to happen for me with Austen flicks.

No sword fights. Not DOOM recommended except for KB, who may have already seen it given his penchant for Austen.

1995

That's right, we watched two versions back-to-back. Stacy owns this DVD. Honestly, we only got halfway through, although we know how it ends. It seemed less familiar to me than the previous version. It's amusing to see how both films copped several of the same lines from the book.

Apparently 95 was a big year for Austen productions, so much so that it was dubbed Austenmania. This is a superior production with more normal looking people and far better atmospheric shots. HP factor 3 - Mrs Dursley. Aberforth & Mafalda Hopkirk. I liked Sally better as Anne and felt Wentworth was too flippant.

Some of the navy men have swords but don't draw them. Same DOOM recommendation as above.
