Mansfield Park (1999)

A serviceable retelling of another Austen book that I haven't read, but the director took liberties fusing Austen's life with her character Fannie. Francis O'Connor is the lead and she's growing on me since The Missing (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...5#pid38165). Downton factor 1: Lord Grantham as the cuckold, extra points for a shy Johnny Lee Miller. It's a grittier version of Austen with references to the slave trade and a topless en flagrante delicto scene, plus there's some talking directly to the camera and moments of still posing as the narration explains some story bit. A tad surreal but it worked well enough, mostly because it wasn't overdone.
No sword fights. Not particularly DOOM recommended unless you're into Austen.

Saw this one years ago. It was pretty good. The movie sort of improved on the book I thought - it's one of her longest and has the blandest heroine.
