The Professor (2019)

Finally caught up with this blockbuster from last year, this Johnny Depp vehicle that put him back on top.  No, not really.  I'm not sure it even got theatrical release in the U.S. and rightly so.  Johnny plays a professor with terminal cancer so he keeps it secret and goes on a mad intoxicated binge, meanwhile trying to give some last life lessons to his students, his best friend, his lesbian daughter who just came out, and his distant cheating wife.  It allows Depp to play drunk for the bulk of the film, reprising Capt Jack in a dramatic role but fails on many levels, particularly the end.  There's one poignent scene when he tells his daughter goodbye that got me only because father daughter scenes are my dramatic kryptonite, but it was bad enough to get Stacy to admit that Depp isn't a good actor after all, despite her admiration for him.  No sword fights (bring back Capt Jack).  Definitely NOT DOOM recommended.
