There's been some Oscar buzz for Eddie Murphy for this and like Roma, it's getting a limited theatrical release in hopes that there will be a nom. I was underwhelmed. There were too many embellishments on the tale of Rudy Ray Moore. It was a feel good movie, almost like a Hallmark special with boobs and lots of F bombs. Actually I don't know why I keep referencing Hallmark specials lately. I haven't seen one in decades. DimN redoes several scenes from Dolemite but even those are embellished. Snoop's & Chris Rock's cameos are cute but minor. Wesley's part is good. And Eddie is Eddie. I never see Rudy, just Eddie. There are some comments on how Rudy was fat, but he wasn't fat. He was big boned and thick, but not pot bellied, at least not in the Dolemite years. And the whole way he picks up the Dozens seemed fake to me. They could've done so much more with Dozens culture. I am happy that this will bring some positive light to Moore, but I hope it inspires a documentary. A disappointing screener but it'll be a fun review to write - lots to chew on and reveal research-wise.
