A beautiful black and white film rescued and restored from oblivion and showing on the newly established Criterion channel (yes, I'm a subscriber).
The story meanders much like the Titus, following various villagers (mostly fisherman) along the Titus River, with a strong focus on two young women in love with the same young fisherman and the tragedies that ensue. Some amazing cinematography, as well as cultural tidbits that I don't begin to understand. There's some uneven acting in the periphery but a solid core, with some very emotional scenes; and while a couple scenes seem sloppily conceived, the brilliant ones more than make up for it. A true treasure.
Watching the villagers going about their daily activities in pouring rain, all to sitar music, puts my mind in a good place.
