A couple of penniless guys hop a train, headed for Florida and hopefully better pickens. They're surprised in the boxcar by a guy with a guitar, who says he'll play them a tune. And so he does, straight to the camera. Afterwards he says he believes he'll take a nap, vanishing behind a bale of hay, allowing our two main guys to reclaim the screen.
They eventually fall of the train, in Florida, and are so hungry they decide to steal chickens to eat from a farmhouse. Thus the title, get it? But they get caught and end up in a small-town jail. I forget all that happens to them, but throughout the movie there's always someone with a guitar, and it gets used, because I guess this is a musical, and it's always to the camera. "Hey there, I see you got yerself a guitar. Mind if I borrow it?" "Sure thing, fella!" Another song. There's lots of hillbillies along the way, ever tryin' to outdumb each other. And let me tell ya, there's some mighty stiff competition.
The singers/guitarists are probably notable names of the time, but I didn't research that.
