The Dead lost a family member a few days before - Ramrod. He was the roadie that Kesey sent who rose to become president of the board. I knew Ramrod, but not well. I partied with him once or twice on tour at the aftershows, but I doubt he knew me beyond the hundreds of other familiar faces in the dead scene.
Phil dedicated the show to Ramrod and played his heart out. Legendary Jazz guitarist John Scofeld sat in, along with Joan Osborne (who I sat near backstage during dinner) and sax player Greg Osby. It was a food drive - if you brough 10 food times, you got a commemorative poster. An amazing show, recalling the glory daze of the Dead. They were also filming a DVD, which I may have to invest in since I didn't see as much of the show as I would've liked. We were super busy at Rock Med. I had a fantastic evening and feel renewed. Who says you don't get flashbacks?!
