Hologram for the King (2016)
#1
A salesman tries to sell a new teleconferencing system to the King of Saudi Arabia. Who wouldn't want to see that.

Tom Hanks plays the salesman lost in the desert, struggling to pull his life together.

It's an odd film. I'd like to see a film where Hanks is sarcastic and funny rather than these heroic schlubs he seems to be playing in every movie. This film goes down that path for a little bit, especially the opening where he sings a Talking Heads song while the world explodes around him. But it never really gets going. The situations of a stranger in a strange land seem a bit hackneyed. Everything seems predictable. And there is no big happy ending. Although, he is on a better path at the end.

Did this go straight to video?  Just don't recall hearing about it.

Then again, I don't exactly jump off the couch and head for the theater when I hear the name Tom Hanks.

He's sort of damaged his brand, though no doubt with a good financial return, for Da Vinci Code crap, and to my mind Captain Philips and Sully fair (these last two may be decent movies, but with all the surprise of the Titanic and I have zero interest).

Anyway, this one sounds intriguing, but not enough for me to get up out of my chair.

Stand down, CF, stand down.

It was in theaters for about a second over the summer. The only thing enticing about it is the title.

Hanks 'historical' films have no suspense. He needs to do a reboot of Bosom Buddies.

Oh yeah?  Oh yeah!  Well, now I'm going to watch it.  Because no one tells me what to do.  No one.

Hmmm.  Wait a sec.  Netflix just sent me Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl.

Maybe I'll watch that instead.
