Sisters (1973) by Brian de Palma
#1
I've been meaning to watch this movie for decades.  Word of mouth had it that it was a cut above the average thriller.  I now agree.

This is a Margo Kitter vehicle, whom I didn't think I liked -- which is probably the reason I kept putting off watching it.  Her breakdown in 1996 probably influenced my opinion of her.  But wow, what a performance she delivers in Sisters.  I had no idea she could do stuff like that.  I was thinking she'd just lucked out getting to play Louis Lane, and that was her one claim to fame.  But here she demonstrates an enormous talent.

De Palma pulls some Hitchcockian rabbits out of his directorial chair, but mutates them enough to make them his own; and he even coaxes Bernard Herrmann (Hitchcock's fave) out of retirement to do the great soundtrack.

Not brilliant, but quite good -- far better than it had any right to be.

As a side-note, Margo Kitter's first role after moving to Hollywood was in Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx (1970), where she played opposite Gene Wilder.  Sigh.  The years are passing...
I'm nobody's pony.

I just learned about Quackser yesterday. I have put it in my queue because it shows a lot of Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin. Probably not the best reason to see a film . . .
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
