The Doomster by Ross McDonald
#1
About 3/4's of the way through the book, I stopped caring about finishing this. So, I didn't.

I saw on Goodreads that Ross McDonald pointed to this book as his breakout book, the one that showed him out to write.  Well, the 1950s were a different time. Racism of all stripes was okay. You get to use terms like wetbacks and Japs and it's okay.

That was partly it, but not the main thing. It might have been fresh and exciting type of writing back then, but most of the tropes, which he might have invented, seem very hackneyed now. I didn't care about the mystery. I didn't like the characters. The storytelling was medium. So, I put the book down and moved on to others.

There was no mention of any of us in the book. I don't even know why it was called the Doomsters. Maybe that answer is in the last quarter of the book. I'll leave it to one of you to find out.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

We need to write our own book.  It could be distilled from the forum here.  If only one of us was a writer....
