Strumpet City (1993)

Everyone wants to watch a six part series about the 1913 Lockout in Dublin, especially as we prepare for the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Uprising. Did you know that when Karl Marx was writing his communist Manifesto, he figured that the revolution he predicted would happen in Ireland?

Okay, maybe we aren't all as invested in Irish history as I am. Okay, I got through two parts of this series of this very melodramatic RTE series. And the reason I got through two parts was I wanted to see if the second episode was just as sappy as the first episode.

Oddly, it boasts a big cast including Peter Ustinov and Peter O'Toole. Ustinov plays King V and O'Toole plays union leader James Larkin. Both are onscreen a total of two minutes. Ustinov doesn't even have any lines. O'Toole gets to chew the scenery to a fine degree.

Basically, the show follows all the small players as workers in Dublin are locked out of the factories because they had the temerity to protest their low wages. Bad things ensue. I'm guessing. I didn't get that far.

But the seeds of rebellion were laid in this strike. I'm sure it was all very dramatic. I'm going to just read the book to see how it all turns out. (But I do know how it all turns out . . . .)
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
