It's the story of Hilly Crystal and his club down in the bowery, CBGB. It's kind of a scattershot film. There are so many bands to cover it just does snippets of them. Some of the scenes are just Alan Rickman standing at the microphone reciting some of the famous bands that got their start at the club. In the Harry Potter tie-in, Rupert Grint is in one of the bands.
It is a cameo-palooza with famous actors coming in to play in their favorite bands. Iggy Pop is played by Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters for instance. Stana Katic shows up as a record producer.
The small semblance of a story revolves around how bad a business man is Hilly Crystal (I kept hearing Billy Crystal every time they mentioned his name). The amazing part is how many bands he gave a start to.
Not a very good movie. More of a snapshot of a time.
Another Rickman, the least Rickman-y so far. He plays Hilly Crystal, proprietor of the legendary punk cradle club. The film overused comic book frames ala Punk magazine and is mostly mediocre band impersonations like Blondie, Iggy, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Police, Ramones, all lip syncing but giving little sense of what those bands may have been like in those days. Hp 2: Ron and of course Snape with extra cred for Kate Beckett in a nipple-revealing wife-beater. The best part was the end credit which showed footage of the Talking Heads bringing Hilly on stage for an award acceptance as a thank you.
A documentary would have been better.
