Love London? Like magic? Like police procedurals? Have a sense of humor? Start at the beginning and get to it. I'll be surprised if BBC doesn't pick these books up for a series. The author has scripted some of the recent new Dr. Who episodes, and his plotting is tight.
Thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy books.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

I've read all of the Aaronovitch books. (Damn it! Wish he'd write faster.)

You might try the books by Benedict Jacka. Similar British modern magic users milieu. Maybe more akin to the Dresden Files. They are still fun.
