I know - not technically 'music', but it was a live performance at The Warfield.
It also featured the string quartet Foreplay who did some instrumentals as well as backing up Neil's narrative.
The show opened with the aforementioned Foreplay doing a few wonderful compositions. They then brought out Neil Gaiman ("Sandman", "Good Omens" and most notably "Sandman"). Neil read a couple of his short stories accompanied by the quartet then retired for intermission.
The main event was Neil reading his graphic novel 'The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains'. It is a tale of an unlikely pair of adventurers seeking treasure on a mysterious island. It involves gods, demons, love, betrayal and revenge. (sorry if I spoiled it for you). A large screen behind him showed the powerful Eddie Campbell (From Hell) illustrations to compliment the words.
Neil is a masterful storyteller. I expected the second half to be 60 - 90 minutes but he went on a full 120 without me being bored. The Warfield seats suck for my 6'3" frame but sore knees was a small price to pay for his performance.
I feel privileged to have been enchanted by a storyteller. Oration is almost a lost art and sitting while someone tells you a tale is as immersive as a movie or game.
