Man of Steel

What the hell? I'm amazed this wasn't reviewed already. You would think a super hero film of this scope would have caught the attention of some of the members of DOOM.

But then you see the film and realize that missing this film probably wasn't such a bad idea.

Except for some epic fight scenes towards the end of the film, this was a pretty miserable exercise. Who wants a mopey Superman? The main theme for the film is for Superman to find out he fits in with the world. There were a lot of canon sins, too. You would think with all the material in the comics, they could come up with a decent story. But no. It is back to the origin tale. It is back to the battle with Zod.

The most persistent thought I had during this film was why are they doing that.

I would fast forward towards the end when Superman takes on the bad guys. Lot's of destruction that would not end.

My favorite comment that I made came early in the film. They have the technology on Krypton to reach other worlds. But still can't get a midwife for the birth of Kal El.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

I keep thinking I should check this out. But even our graphic artist here, who is a huge comic book nerd and likes anything that is remotely connected to comics, gave it a thumbs down.

Maybe I'll watch reruns of my classmate Teri in that old TV series instead.

What Greg said.

Superman is not a tortured soul like Batman. He is an alien hero who protects Earth from domestic and alien threats.

This movie should have been a wild ride of space battles and Mr. Mxyzptllk humor.

Bizarro should be introduced and Supes giving Batman a bit of Kryptonite (in case he gets out of hand) would be part of the plot.

But no, we get a Smallville, whiny Superman with lots of ominous cello music who goes to church for advice.

On the plus side, the sound mix was very nice. The soundtrack did not overwhelm the dialogue (on my system). The costumes were OK (the 'black on black' Superman logo was lame), however the visual FX were WAY over the top. Superman is a supernormal guy in a normal world. Too much time was spent on 'crazy sci-fi technology' to the detriment of Superman being a regular Joe.

I would say "stay away" unless you crave comic-book movies like i do.
