Building the Dream: The story of Hearst Castle
#1
theQueen/fiancee stopped at Hearst Castle on our way down the coast from Carmel. This is the film they show on the grounds in Imax while you wait for the bus ride to the house. TheQueen and I were pressed for time (Dogs to walk, cats to herd) so we didn't stay for the film. When I saw they had it on Netflix, I thought I would remedy that lack.

I was hoping for a cool documentary with lots of rare footage. Instead I got this lame making of recreation fool of actors and scant actual building footage. What made it even weirder was it was made for Imax back when the coolest thing you could do were those imersive flying shots over things. Those look really great on the giant screen, I still remember the first IMAX I saw in Spokane, but that was back in the 1970's. And they don't translate well to the small screen.

The best parts about the film were the actual newsreel footage they had. They showed early shots of building the Neptune Pool and how the house originally only had one bell tower. But there were far to few of these shots. Most of the recreation shots took place in rooms we had been and had copious pictures of already.

And no, no sword fights.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
