Master of Disguise by Tony Melendez
#1
The story for Argo is based on one of the exploits in this book but probably came out of the more expanded version of the story in the book Argo by the same author.

Basically, Melendez (Ben Affleck's character) works for the CIA. He was recruited early as a forger and eventually transferred into disguises rising all the way up to be the head of he department. He also won some awards for meritorious service, including the Argo caper.

It starts in the near east where he is young and dumb and getting people out of Laos. He then moves to Russia and helps to get people out of there. then he does the same in Iran. It is all told in that arrogant I'm a really cool spy sort of way. It had some very interesting stories about the clandestine side of the cold war. And it told the Argo story.

The best part of the Argo story that isn't in the movie is the fact the fake film was based on a real film. And the real film was going to be based on Zelazny's Lord of Light. That picture fell through because of financial irregularities. But Jack Kirby did the artist pre-visualization and the Planet of the Apes make-up guy tipped off Melendez to the failed story.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
