Space Shuttle Fly-By
#1
So, the Shuttle is flying over Los Angeles and I thought I could spot it pretty well from the spot near my house where I walk the dogs in the morning. I thought I was being all crafty but pretty much all my neighbors had the same idea. There was quite the crowd at the area called Flat Top near our Radio Tower. (I found out the Radio station atop the Radio Tower Hill was originally bought by Mary Baker Edddy and it is where she would broadcast her programs from. They still broadcast today)

I waited for about a forty five minutes with my fellow MHers listening to them babble. Our local government liaison was there with his walkie so we could updates on the Shuttles location. It was late because I guess it spent a lot of time screwing around in San Francisco rather than coming straight to Los Angeles and all the beautiful people.

Who knew it would be quite the fun show. It circled downtown and then flew to Long Beach, so we lost it for a while. Then it came back and circled the Hollywood Sign and Universal City Walk. All the news stations could talk about was how snarled traffic was going to be because everybody would stop and look at the big plane in the sky. If my neighborhood was anything to go by, people were blowing off work and heading to the nearest high spot. We could see two other hills with people from Flat Top.

The plane then headed out to JPL so we got some nice views of it skidding across the mountain. From JPL, it would then head to Disneyland before heading to LAX where it will sit in a hanger for a couple of weeks until the clear they route to the Science Museum of trees. tQ has a friend a long the route so there will probably be more pictures in the future.

The point of all this is that between JPL and Disneyland is Flat Top. After the Shuttle did it's fly-by of JPL, it turned and headed south. Everybody on the hill was cheering for it to make the turn headed to us. At first it didn't. It seemed like it was going to north of us.

But then the pilot of the 747 course corrected and headed straight down the Arroyo Seco right over our heads. The hill, according to our local official, was at 880 feet so the plane was only about 700 feet above our heads.

It was awesome. I want them to fly by every day. I want them to build more cool space ships. I would rather this be the end of a chapter rather than the end of an era. There are more but similar pics to this on Facebook.

So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

I was totally thinking about getting up on our roof to see this, but got sucked into work and forgot about the flyover until later when I saw all the fb chatter.
