The Cure @ Pantages Theater, L.A.,CA 11/21/11
#1
OK - So one week after I said I hate driving a long way to see a show Dee Dee tells me her nieces backed out on an L.A. trip to see The Cure. I'm not about to let her go alone (I've seen those Robert Redford movies) so I volunteer to make the journey.

We drop Clio off at boarding, Artemis off with my mom and head down around 11:30. Traffic is light and we get to Hollywood around 5PM. Parking across from the theater was $10.00. Those bastards at the Greek charge $20.

We cruise the sidewalk stars and have a quick bite at Dillan's Irish Pub.

The Pantages Theater is famous enough to warrant its own signs off the freeway. It reminded me of The Fox, Oakland, but a lot 'busier'. The art-deco was in full-swing but without the elegance of The Fox (my opinion). The lobby was filled with garnish but no true chandeliers.

We had mezzanine seats so made our way upstairs. The roof had this incredible light fixture that looked like a combination of Metropolis and Krypton turned upside down. The seats had more leg room than The Warfield and much more cushioning.

The show was scheduled for 7:30 so the band came on at 8PM (your loss Panteges; I would have bought another drink).

The Cure played their first 3 albums back-to-back; "Three Imaginary Boys", "17 Seconds" and "Faith" then let loose a barrage of 3 encores mixing 80's B-Sides with top-ten hits.

Dee Dee had a great time. I was glad I bought earplugs (not for the band, but for the shrieking).

Then we drove home. I-5 is a fog nightmare. The mist grabs your mind and forces a pattern of tunnels, cliffs and stalled cars or antelope in your path. If you're lucky, you can 'lock on' to the tail lights ahead of you to get your bearings.

24+ hours without sleep. I am not almost 50 godammit!

That's a freaking crazy long way to go to see a band. Especially on a Monday. And to report here the next day. Dayum!
